two way radio digital vs analogMy basic review of the new technological advancement it begins well, looks rather awesome, is simple to run and actually energy efficient, the technology is a top quality product. I’m happy I bought it, read further beneath.

Bit Torrent website IsoHunt.com, a popular website that specializes in downloadable content, is being shut down following a court settlement.

The site, which was founded in 2003, was extremely popular with users. Some 7.4 million viewers had visited the site within three years of it going live. At its peak, Isohunt received an average of 40 million searches a month.

In response to the California court’s ruling, IsoHunt’s founder Gary Fung wrote on his blog that “its sad to see my baby go”.

The problems began when a group of major corporations, including Disney, Paramount and 20th Century Fox, accused the site of copyright infringement. A large portion of IsoHunt’s Torrent files contained copyrighted material, such as movies, TV shows and music albums.

The court case has taken more than 7 years to reach its conclusion, but a decision has finally been made.

Mr Fung has been ordered to pay $110m (Ł68m) to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), but since neither he, nor his company has access to funds of this kind, it is estimated that the MPAA will only receive $2-$4m from Fung.

It should be noted, however, that IsoHunt did not actually upload any pirated material. According to Mr. Fung, the IsoHunt users were ultimately responsible for what they made available for download, as opposed to the site itself, which merely served as a directory for available content.

Nevertheless, MPAA Chairman Chris Dodd was pleased with the Court’s decision, saying, “The successful outcome of this landmark lawsuit will also will help preserve jobs and protect the tens of thousands of businesses in the creative industries, whose hard work and investments are exploited by sites like IsoHunt.”

Fung has argued elsewhere that, if the entertainment industry was to fully embrace digital media (for example by lowering prices and offering simultaneous digital releases), it could easily render sites like his obsolete.

The website http://www.piracydata.org, which is run by a team of researchers from Virginia, US, has suggested that, of the top 10 most pirated movies of the week, half were unavailable for legal download and none were available for streaming, making piracy the only option for viewers wishing to watch these films over the Internet.

But how damaging is online piracy to Hollywood’s profit margins? The 2008 James Cameron movie ‘Avatar’, for example, has been listed as ‘the most pirated film of all time’, after being downloaded something like 21million times worldwide. However, the movie still garnered $600m in DVD sales in the US alone, which is not taking rentals into account (which garnered a further $57m, again, just in the US). This indicates that a considerable number of people are downloading the movie as well as buying the DVD/Blu Ray release.

Not everyone in the film and television industries is opposed to piracy either. Musician, actor and spoken word performer Henry Rollins has repeatedly stated that he’d “rather be heard than paid” and Vince Gilligan, creator of the popular US TV show ‘Breaking Bad’ has said that piracy helped his show to be successful, by increasing “brand awareness” of his product.

In a Q&A session on Reddit, Gary Fung said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race and I have remained faithful. 10.5 years of IsoHunt has been a long journey by any business definition and forever in Internet start-up time”.
Regardless of the debates, the Isohunt site will likely be completely shut down by the time you read this.

Orwigsburg council approves Two way radio purchase for communications system update

two way radio neck micWithout giving too much about this two way radio laws article, but I found it remarkable and significant to what I’m now doing.

The borough council approved the purchase of six radios to use with the recent emergency communications system updates to the police department at a cost of $27,000 at its Wednesday meeting.

Under new federal regulations, the county’s emergency management communications network must be converted to a narrowband frequency to make it more efficient. The county is in the process of complying with Federal Communications Commission-required upgrades to emergency communications.

The borough ordered six Motorola APX6000 radios from Green’s Communications, Pottsville, on Friday. Three 2 Way Radios will be placed in the cars and three are for officers to carry.

The radios could take four weeks to arrive, borough Manager Mike Lonergan said.

In other news, the council also voted to approve a proposal by the Exeter Ambulance Association, Berks County, for two Automated External Defibrillators.

The cost for the AEDs is $4,200. They will replace one for the police department that is at least 10 years old, Lonergan said.

Also at the meeting, Lonergan said he will apply for a $40,000 grant through the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for new playground equipment at Community Memorial Hall, mulch and other park maintenance.

The playground equipment that is in good shape, such as the jungle gym, merry-go-round and seesaw, would not need to be replaced. However, the swing set is about 20 years old and could be removed or relocated to another park in the borough, Lonergan said.

The deadline to apply for the grant is Wednesday, and the borough could know by the fall if the grant is awarded. A $20,000 match by the borough would be required and would be paid through by funds designated for recreation use.

In other council action, approval was granted for Lonergan to prepare a final agreement between the borough and Schuylkill County Municipal Authority for the supplemental operation and maintenance services for the borough water and wastewater systems after review by the borough solicitor Frank Tamulonis and an engineer from SCMA.

The cost to the borough for the service is $1,850 per month and would likely start this month. The borough previously gave approval to execute a memorandum of understanding with the authority to provide the aforementioned support.

The council also authorized Tamulonis to advertise an ordinance for declarations of taking or using eminent domain to obtain easements for the safe routes to schools project if necessary. The project would involve curbs and sidewalks from downtown Market Street to Blue Mountain Elementary East along Red Dale Road for a total of about 1,200 feet, Lonergan said.

The borough was awarded a $303,000 grant in 2009 through the Safe Routes to Schools Program through the state Department of Transportation.

“We do not anticipate the ordinance being necessary,” Lonergan said. However, if it is, the borough would compensate property owners.

Chinese radio station fans meet in Erode

While many of my visitors might be excited about some of our own articles, here is one i discovered while rummaging around wordpress.com that is far better written than I could ever hope to reach. Maybe in the future I’ll get to their rank, you never know.

2 way radioCOIMBATORE: Pallavi K Paramasivam, a 52-year-old social worker in Perundurai, remembers the first radio he got when he was just 15 years old. He would tune the Walkie Talkie in all possible ways to reach stations that played Tamil programmes. It was during one such attempt that he received the broadcast of the Tamil service of the Chinese Radio International (CRI). He went on to become such a fan of this radio station and wrote several letters that the station invited him on a two-week trip to China in 1986.

Paramasivam visited Beijing and Shanghai and tourist spots including The Great Wall of China. When he travelled to China during the 2008 Olympics, CRI helped him find lodging and passes to the games venues. “I was a regular listener of many international radio stations including the Tamil services of BBC, Moscow and Pakistan. But what attracted me to CRI-Tamil service was that they replied to my letters,” he said.

There are several admirers of the CRI-Tamil service, which started its broadcast in 1963. They are so many in number that came together to set up a listeners’ association in 1986. The association organises listeners’ meets every year, which is attended without fail by members from across the state. Paramasivam, for instance, is a regular at meetings since 1986.

On Saturday, about 300 listeners attended the 25+t+h CRI-Tamil service listeners meet at Perundurai. Many of them became fans of the radio station by writing letters. Prompt replies from the station ensured that they developed a kind of emotional relationship with the radio station.

“Last year, the radio announced greetings for my daughter’s marriage,” said S Porunaibalu from Tirunelveli. He started listening to CRI a decade ago after a friend told him about the radio station. His first letter received an enquiry from the local police station. But he was thrilled once he received a reply and from then on sent the station several letters. Even in this internet age, he sends letters by post.

Zhao Jiang, director of the CRI, says that they receive several thousands of letters from the listeners every year. “This radio service has helped improve ties between the countries and develop an interest in China among the listeners,” she said.

Interestingly, the listeners appreciate the way the Chinese radio speaks Tamil. “They speak in pure Tamil and the programmes are interesting and their presentation is excellent,” says S Senthilkumar, a Pollachi resident.

The programmes are predominantly feature stories. They also broadcast news which is, of course, from a Chinese perspective. Some of the listeners said these broadcasts help them understand the Chinese view on issues like Tibet as well as international affairs.
